New Spark Plugs

Spark plugs are not something that most drivers are concerned about and yet they play a vital role in the car’s operation. When the injectors spray fuel mist, the spark plugs generate energy that ignites it in the combustion chamber which drives the crankshaft and makes the vehicle move. Spark plugs are not difficult to maintain but they do need attention from time to time. As they come in two sizes, the owner’s manual will outline the required size and schedule for replacement. When you need them checked or replaced, the team at Cable Dahmer Kia in Kansas City are ready to help.

How Spark Plugs Work

Spark plugs are made up of several components. An electrode with precious metal is combined with a ceramic insulator in a steel casing with an air gap. They create the spark by pulling energy from the ignition coil which is located outside of the engine. The energy travels across the air gap in the spark plug to ignite the fuel injector mist inside the combustion chamber.

Changing You Spark Plugs

The maintenance schedule for spark plugs varies based on the type of plugs you have. Copper tipped plugs can last 30,000 miles while platinum and iridium tipped plugs last up to 100,000 miles. The Kia owner’s manual will state what your vehicle needs.

Risks Of Not Replacing Your Spark Plugs

Spark plugs are checked for signs of erosion during most normal visits to the service center. Even if they appear fine, it’s good to change them when the manufacturer recommends as they become less effective as they age. At the minimum, if they are not changed, the vehicle will become less fuel efficient. Also, misfiring spark plugs can leak fuel. Ultimately, this can damage the catalytic converter which is very expensive to repair. In some vehicles, malfunctioning spark plugs will cause the check engine light to come on and alert drivers. If you notice this, visit the dealer as soon as you can.
